A romantic break: Whether the budget’s tight or you fancy a splurge, Paris is a born matchmaker. There’s plenty to do, you won’t go hungry, and as the hotel rooms are notoriously small, you’ll just have to be friends. In summer try to stay near a park, gardens or the river – good areas are the Marais, St Germain-des-Prés and, if you want nightlife, Bastille.
Families: The girls will love the art, the grand hotels, the famous fashion stores – take a stroll along avenue Montaigne then have a drink at the Hôtel Plaza Athenée. Boys like the cakes, the Beaubourg, climbing up Sacré-Coeur and Notre-Dame. Children under 18 get in free at most museums, and if you really love them there’s always Disneyland Paris…
Foodies: Artisan bakers, decadent chocolatiers, gourmet treats from Hédiard, a picnic from the bountiful market in rue Mouffetard – really, it’s pointless resisting.
